Florida training 10-11

In Florida in October, we did orientation with Wycliffe. We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know others who attended with us and hearing their stories of how God led them to be involved in missions! Two families are headed to Vanuatu, praise God! And we learned that Vanuatu is in the top 20 countries most needing Bible translation, so we can use you too; come on over!!

All the attendees.  Their largest group yet!
Presenting the ministry.
All those going to Vanuatu, Lord-willing!
The Team
Displays about Bible translation issues in what they call the Discovery Center.
Various words for "to carry" in a language.  They're all different based on what you're carrying and how - just imagine learning all of those!

Displays of John 3:16 in various languages with translated New Testaments around the world.  You can see the verse in each language, hear it read by a native speaker, and see a model of a real person from the language group.

East coast travel

We had the fantastic opportunity last weekend of seeing some friends who also have hearts for missions. Casey and Val (and Steve) hosted us in New Jersey and we also got to meet people at their church and some friends, Brad and Elly, who are missionaries in Africa also home on furlough.

I was also able to see my friend Carla, who attended linguistics school with me in Australia in 2010. I never would have dreamed we'd be able to see each other way over in Pennsylvania. What a blessing!

Haircut

I got my hair cut this weekend to donate to the American Cancer Society.  Unfortunately, my hair is so thin it'll be a very small donation, but it was fun to do and I think I'll grow it out and do it again!  Vanuatu was very hair-growing friendly so shouldn't be a problem to grow it long again when I get there.  :)

Carving Pumpkins

My parents grew a nice big garden to share with us since we were around this year.  And that meant pumpkin carving! :)

36 years!

My parents celebrated their 36th anniversary this week.  We took them out to a new Chinese place in town for a family lunch.  Congratulations to them!  :)

Sleepovers

Saturday nights Jesiah, Gwen, and Addy rotate between sleeping over at my house.  I pick one up in the afternoon, we hang out until bedtime, do a few activities in the AM, then go to my ni-Van church and then back to the Richards for lunch.  Then I usually spend a few hours of the afternoon with the Richards on Sunday before heading back home.
It's been a fun routine and I really enjoy the one-on-one time with the kids.  We've made salt-dough creations, kazoos, paper chain people, napkin angels, and paintings in our times together.  Sometimes Si and I watch cartoons or dance clips from You Tube together too.

Poor Addy's salt dough snakes burnt to a crisp since I forgot them in the oven...  And apparently I need to take some pictures with Addy!  Sorry girl!

Off to Santo island

Tomorrow morning I fly to Santo island north of here. Santo is where our team spent the bulk of our time on our survey trip last year. I was invited to attend a translation workshop up at what we've heard is the one, accredited Bible school in Vanuatu, called Talua College. Ross and Lyndal Webb, directors for Wycliffe/SIL here in Vanuatu are heading the workshop (but typically are my upstairs neighbors). Mainly they invited me to kindly not leave me alone in the building for the week, but also as an opportunity to practice Bislama and get more of a taste of translation work. The full workshop will be Bislama and I will be staying in the girls' dorm with all the Ni-Vanuatu girls. I'm excited but nervous for the opportunity. I'm excited for the time to meet and have quality time with Ni-Van girls, to help with anything I'm able in the workshop, and to be able to sit in on the teaching, not to mention all the Bislama learning time! I'm nervous about unknowns and about being "on" all day and night with Bislama. Please pray that my brain is able to process everything, that I am a help rather than in the way, and that I am an encouragement and godly friend to new people I meet! I'll post pictures and updates when I return, Lord-willing.

For the workshop, I'm to bring my own sleeping mat and mosquito net. Bathrooms are separate but I'm expecting pretty rustic accommodations in general. Lyndal and Ross stay in a guest house and she said they've had to shut their bedroom door there at night so they can sleep over the noise of the rats in the kitchen! Students meals include bread and tea for breakfast and rice, papaya, and canned meat for lunch and supper every day. That makes life predictable doesn't it? Lyndal said I was probably welcome to eat with staff so hopefully their fare includes vegetables. :)

Speaking of vegetables, just for fun I took some shots of what are called long beans here. Gretchen told me today that she saw a woman at the market with one as long as her BODY! Wow, now that's a long bean. Inside it's like if you let all the slimy stuff in a pumpkin dry a bit and get spongy. You peel them (this one is peeled already), cut them open, scrape out the insides, then cut them up and put them in whatever dish you are cooking. I added it to spaghetti sauce. They are a bit tart but pretty good.
I tried to add some pics from weaving mats with Magreth and Jen but internet is funny tonight so I'll post that later. I think I did finally fix the smilebox in my post earlier this month so try it again. It at least played every picture for me this time, if slow. If it's still not working, let me know and I'll use something other than Smilebox. Finally, be praying for guys on my team - Houghton, Jim and Brad. They left on a boat tonight for Ambrym island (up north too) for a week to do some survey). Ambrym is always referred to here as the island with the strongest kastom (custom) magic.

Earthquakes

There's been 2 earthquakes that I've known about and felt since I've been here. One was in September sometime and the other just a few days ago. Vanuatu is right on a plate so gets them constantly. Check out this link for recent ones in the South Pacific. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Maps/region/S_Pacific.php Vanuatu is at about -15 latitude on this map and about 195 longitude. Saturday evening at about 8:45PM there was an earthquake a few seconds long that shook the metal overhang (like a carport) just below my window, banging it into my bedroom wall. After I moved in here, I checked out where the easiest place would be to break into my apartment. Jumping onto this overhang would allow just a few steps walk to be right at my window so I was convinced that someone had done this. A part of the yard raises up so it's flush with the overhang so it wouldn't take an athletic person to just step from the grass to the overhang. Anyway, I shined my flashlight out but just got reflection off the window. After some personal debate, I went upstairs and woke up Ross and Lyndal (they go to bed early, like I should be doing every night) and asked if they'd help me check it out. They asked if I'd just felt the earthquake so I felt pretty sheepish, telling them that must have been the source of the banging overhang. Ross still was very nice and checked around outside. They were both very sweet about the whole interruption and I was embarrased, but thank goodness for no intruders. :) In looking online, I can't even find the earthquake I felt so I have no idea what the magnitude was, but it was short and not very strong. Houghton and Gretchen didn't even feel it, much like I'm sure there have been lots of other earthquakes here that I haven't felt. If you hear of earthquakes here, don't worry, we're probably ok unless it hits international news!

An Anniversary Tribute

As of this October, my parents have been married for 33 years - wow! Praise God for His faithfulness to them in granting them grace to extend to each other in their marriage to keep it strong and growing over all these years. Congratulations mom and dad, and thanks for your example of a godly marriage pointing to the mystery of Christ and His relationship with the Church. Love you. (And thanks Kathy for this great recent shot of them!)

Farewell, my friends

Man, I'm already having to say goodbye's here and I've only lived in Vanuatu 2 months. Pete and Liz, my next door neighbors, head back home to Australia tomorrow. They've served as support staff with SIL for about 1 1/2 years now. Liz has been a great friend and she and Pete are fantastic comic relief within shouting distance across the hall. It's been super fun to get to know them and fellowship with them. We've had lots of conversations in doorways and in the hallway as well as chatting time over tea or food. Liz introduced me to exercise class which has been a fun place to of course get exercise, but also learn to Bislama and make Ni-Vanuatu friends. She and Pete brought me in on their secret favorite dive of a little Chinese take-away place with cheap but good food. They've patiently repeated back the good 20% of everything they say that I can't understand. They've taught me all sorts of weird Aussie phrases and words that I can't remember now but I'm sure I'll need to be able to use appropriately next year. (I know, I know - you guys are going to be indignant that I called Aussie-anything weird but I figure with all the American-bashing, it's only fair to dish it back out on my own blog...) :) It's been real - it's been fun - I will miss you guys! God's grace and wisdom be yours. (Oh, and that'll be $10.00 for the extra publicity given you on my blog... Feel free to wait and pay me when we see you in Sydney in December.) :)

Minnesota in the Fall

Northern Minnesota was indeed a lovely place to visit in the fall! We shared in Karlstad, MN at David and Jen's church. Jen is the daughter of Houghton's high school pastor, Paul. Paul has 2 daughters we've visited now whose husbands are pastors. David and Jen have 4 very sweet kids: Caleb, Zach (who showed us all his breakdancing moves), Abby, and Grace. Jesiah and Gwen always love it when we can stay somewhere with kids they can play with.

After our presentation in Karlstad, we drove to Deer River and met up with Paul and Carol. Paul, who used to pastor in Fallon, MT, now pastors at Marcell Community Church in a rural retirement community in northern Minnesota. We ate supper with them and were introduced to our host couple - Betty and Harley.

Betty and Harley let us stay in their gorgeous lakefront house and we got to play a bit on Saturday. They had 2 four-wheelers so we all piled on them and checked out the forest trails Harley had leveled out in the 13 acres of forest behind his and others' homes. Gweny missed out on the fun during her nap, but Jesiah loved riding with Houghton and Gretchen. Sunday we presented at the Marcell church and enjoyed a potluck with them, getting to meet mostly retirees who visit on the weekends, but a few families as well. They had a missions emphasis Sunday so it was fun to hear about missionaries they support as a church body and what God is doing in them around the world.

Sunday night we left and stayed with Rick and Jamie, who are planning to go to candidate orientation this January with Biblical Ministries Worldwide, the organization I am affiliated with. They have 6 adopted children so Gweny and Jesiah could "let it all hang out" at their house and it was fun to see all the dynamics. They do a really cool singing and prayer time every night before the kids go to bed so they allowed us to participate. Here is the group singing "Countdown." Jesiah is the one in the Spiderman pajamas jamming out on the left "helping" Rick hold the song words. :)

We really had neat new relationships started on this trip and are so thankful to our 3 wonderful families who let us crash at their homes and fed us wonderful meals!

Officially Commissioned

Grace Bible Church of Miles City, Montana, our sending church, officially commissioned us as their first homegrown missionaries on Sunday, October 7. The board of elders prayed over us and Jerry Coon, our pastor, gave us a biblical charge from Joshua 1 to be strong and courageous, as well as to the church body to "hold the ropes" for us and send us out in a manner worthy of the Lord (3 John). GBC has been a huge blessing to us in backing us not only financially, but also prayerfully and through encouragement, as well as in many practical ways. We are thankful to you, our Grace Bible family, a you send us out to Vanuatu!

Following the commissioning service, we held a dessert presentation for those interested in learning more about Vanuatu and our ministry. Quite a few people returned for that and expressed interest in teaming up with us to reach Ni-Vanuatu for Christ!
This week we also had the privilege of participating in a friend, April's wedding. Houghton did the ceremony and Gretchen was the maid of honor. April attended high school with Gretchen so has been a long-term friend and it was fun to see her match up with a Christian guy, Caleb. My mom and I got to put out all the tasty little chocolate mini-cakes for the reception so it was hard not to sample them in advance. We did restrain ourselves for your sake though, April. :)

This weekend we present at a small country church nearby in Ismay, MT in the morning and head back to the little Coalwood church in the evening. Next week Tuesday, Lord-willing, we take off for Minnesota again. There are several churches there we will be presenting at within a week's time. When we return, we'll drive back to western Montana. I get to see my alma mater Bible school, Montana Wilderness School of the Bible. We are speaking to students there and also visiting Pastor Joe's church in Fort Benton. Joe and his wife Bev were among the staff families at Wilderness when I attended from 97-98. I'm excited to catch up with all of them again.

While we are in Montana we are definitely redeeming the time! I'm working on my next newsletter to hopefully send out the end of this month. I'm also working on my presentation to the girls at Frontier when we return for the missions conference in November. We finally got out all our August/September newsletters to our home church here and caught up on some relationships here as well as on correspondence. I am attempting to work on setting up a schedule for our time in Boise in January, Lord-willing. We celebrated my parents' 32nd wedding anniversary the 11th! Finally, I've spent days researching how to keep up my counseling license and certification current (with continuing education requirements) while in a 3rd-world country. That's one of those things that seems impossible to make a good decision about in advance, but I'm trying to be faithful to have some ideas in place at least. It's been nice to be back again for a bit before we hit the road again!

As I wrap up, I'll share a verse that impacted me this morning: "Make me know Your ways, O Lord; teach me Your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for You I wait all the day." Psalm 25:4-5
